SUMMARY:ART AND MATH SEMINAR:Between Perception and Structure: Seeing Math Through Art and Nature
DESCRIPTION:ART AND MATH SEMINAR:Between Perception and Structure: Seeing Math Through Art and NatureSpeaker: Kevin BernsteinDate:  November 20\, 2025\, noon-1pm (Topeka\, Kansas time)Abstract: When we look closely—at a leaf\, light through water\, or the surface of a painting—there is a sense of order that feels mathematical\, even when we cannot describe it in numbers. While mathematics could explain that order\, my way of knowing it comes through observation and making—through rhythm\, symmetry\, and the relationships that emerge in process. This talk reflects on how art and nature allow us to experience structure as something felt rather than solved.  Through my paintings and work with Nature Collab\, I explore how curiosity becomes a bridge between creative and analytical ways of thinking—between what feels like math and what we call wonder. Mathematics here is not calculation; it is a way of noticing\, a quiet conversation between perception and understanding. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNature Collab Affiliate:  Dr. Natasha Rojkovskaia hosts the Art and Math Seminar and invites you to Jessica Wynne: Do Not Erase

In fact\, quite a few became artists because they hated the subject in high school or\, put more simply and honestly\, they just weren’t good at it. As with everything\, there are exceptions. I’ll be looking at some examples of modern artists who were fascinated by the role mathematics and its products could play in art. Their interests will range from non-Euclidean geometries\, space-time formulations\, irrational and imaginary numbers\, 3-D mathematical models\, and sequences such as the Fibonacci numbers. In many cases\, the results were highly innovative even if the understanding was rudimentary and occasionally wrong.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the speaker:  Dr. John G. Hatch is associate professor of art history in the Department of Visual Arts at Western University in London Ontario where he teaches modern art and design. He received his doctorate from the University of Essex (U.K.) in art history and theory. Dr. Hatch’s research has frequently examined the points of convergence between art and science. His articles have looked at a range of topics including the geometry of ancient Greek temple design\, the influence of Keplerian cosmology on Italian Baroque architecture\, entropy’s role in the earthworks of Robert Smithson\, and most recently the impact of relativistic theories on De Stijl architecture and design. The sciences are also a key focal point in the monographs Dr. Hatch has written on the Canadian landscape painters Paterson Ewen and Kazuo Nakamura.\n\n\n\nWebpage of John Hatch:https://www.uwo.ca/visarts/about/facultypages/hatch_j.html

SUMMARY:Nature Collab: Exploring Intersections\, Confluences\, and Cross-Fertilizations of Art and Science
DESCRIPTION:Kevin Bernstein and Nancy Morrow\, Department of Art\, will co-chair a panel at the 2024 Mid America Print Council Biennial Conference\, From the Ashes. Kansas State University\, October 2-5. \n\n\n\nNature Collab: Exploring Intersections\, Confluences\, and Cross-Fertilizations of Art and Science\n\n\n\nOctober 4\, 10:30-11:45 am\, Bluemont Room\, K-State Union\, 2nd Floor\n\n\n\nPanelists: Michael Garrity\, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife; Kevin Bernstein and Nancy Morrow\, Department of Art\, Kansas State University\, and Elise Richman\, Department of Art and Art History\, University of Puget Sound.\n\n\n\nNature Collab is a new initiative of the Departments of Art and Entomology at Kansas State University\, developed as a resource and platform to stimulate novel approaches to interdisciplinary research\, creative inquiry\, dialogue\, and learning. This session\, presented by Nature Collab and K-State’s Department of Art\, explores the intrinsic\, interconnectedness between the fields of art\, design\, and science\, and looks at ways in which artists and scientists can influence and inspire one another\, encouraging the cross-fertilization of creative and scientific inquiry independent of conventional discipline boundaries.
